SZA SOS ALBUM REVIEW

SZA SOS ALBUM REVIEW

Sza just dropped a new album and it's all the rave right now. To be honest, I am not a big fan of hers, but I wanted to listen because I was a little deprived of music. Upon looking at the album cover, I was intrigued. This album talks about heartbreaks, situationships, love and lost. It talks of taking revenge, being vulnerable and grieving. The sound quality is beautiful, the lyrics are iffy, but there is quality. Here is my full review of SZA's new album SOS.

Album Cover

I personally loved the album cover. I heard that the album cover is inspired by the famous picture of Princess Diana sitting on her yacht.

I thought this was a great idea. Not only does it perfectly capture the feeling of wanting to be alone, it also fits into the themes of loneliness, solitude, peace and wonder. SZA sitting out in the open water, no way of knowing where shore is, surrounded by water but being at peace of the unknown, being in the unknown. I love that the cover was simple, yet effective in conveying emotion and thought. I will say it is a def 10/10!

Production

Production wise, I loved the ethereal, classic vibes mixed in with R&B. I really think she and her producers pulled of the perfect Alt R&B. I also think this type of style transforms into the new type of R&B genre for the years to come. We can already hear it in many albums, not just now, but others before. Also, I am not a big fan of her vocals. I always felt they were not as strong and could not really hold the weight of the production of her songs, but this album, I felt that her vocals were stronger and there was a balance between them. Overall, the style, composition, vocals and mixing were excellent especially on songs such as Love Language, Notice Me, Seek and Destroy, Kill Bill and F2F. (Can we also talk about that mix of genre there. It was giving very Disney Channel.)

Lyrics

The lyrics was the controversy of the album. There was definitely some toxic topics that were going on such as staying in a relationship where the person actively gaslights you, ignores you, and emotionally and mentally abuses you. Now, the thing about this is I do not agree with the lyrics nor have ever felt them. I have felt many real, strong emotions but I have never felt called to call myself a loser, OK. Now I love that Sza was able to express herself fully and want to share that with others. There is NOTHING wrong with that. I just did not think the lyrics were healthy and that I could vibe with them. Some people thought they were outright crazy:

Now I will still be listening to the songs. I don't care that deeply but I just didn't like it and to be honest I felt like it was messing with my vibes. That's not the type of energy I am trying to take into 2023. But anyways moving on.

Overall

My overall feeling is that it was a strong album. Definitely a repeat album. Even if its just one song, you might find something in there. I certainly did. It might not resonate with you. It certainly didn't with me, but I think after a five year wait it was ok. The score I would give it is a solid 7/10. This album definitely helped me get out of my music funk and try to discover new music.
